Now a days there are lot of discussion about whether greed is good or not. I think it’s become a topic of discussion for everyone after economic downturn and collapse of many organizations. We all know the reasons for financial crisis and with all those reasons, the conclusion always comes that one of the reason for crisis was the Greed. There are many examples of companies who failed because of greed such as; one of the more notable cases of greed was Enron’s leadership. The Enron scandal came in October 2001. It was very well respected company and there were many people who would like to work with such a big company but it was involved in many unethical cases like fraudulent self-dealing, falsification of financial information, and illegal market manipulations. Enron acted unethically, illegally and in conflict with their stakeholders’ for their best interests over the past decade. The other examples include, Satyam Computer Services which was one of the respected companies in India and this company chairman in January 2009 had admitted that had intentionally fixed the balance sheet, which included a severely inflated cash number, the subjecting of a major liability on funds arranged by him. A collection of other big name fraud and greed cases include WorldCom Inc, Tyco International Ltd. The greed and fraud leadership of one person negatively affected so many innocent people. So with all these crises, conclusion only comes that greed is not at all good.
Though there are many people who won’t agree with my point and will stuck that greed is good for business. I too agree that greed is good for business in order to have profit, but excessive greed is always bad for the business. There are natural disasters and there are man-made disasters and man-made disasters are always caused by their excessive greed. Now a day’s leaders are so preoccupied and totally focusing on with the goal of profit maximization for self-serving interests that they are not considering the implications and their actions which are affecting too many parties include both shareholders and stakeholders. And these leaders are breaking all the law, ethical boundaries and putting their own benefit and interest in front of those they were supposed to be representing. In a past we have seen many such leaders’ example that done business for their self interest. I know every business work for self interest but there is lot of difference between self interest and more self interest. In self interest, leaders are not only thinking about their business but they also think about the things which are associated with environment both internally and externally whereas in more self interest, leaders only think about their business and how to earn lots of profit. So because of excessive greed millions of ordinary people across the countries are suffering and they are still paying it now. They are paying it in damaged pensions, higher mortgage rates, and vulnerable savings and of course they have lost jobs. A self interest or greed should only be there when you are not harming others with your action and making money by following all rules and regulation and doing business more ethically. In that case doing greed for your company or business is not bad. Greed is only bad when you are doing any activities which you know it is not good for a business in a long term.
I think there is such a term in the business world as a fair profit and a fair competition in which everybody in the business world is making profit, rather than one particular business that is gobbling up all of the interests of others. We know money is the root of all evil, it desire for status, either greed to increase one’s status, or jealousy over losing in the status game to others. Desire for money or greed for money is a good thing when people play by the rules and when their desire for money and status results in better ways of doing business and in invention that help people and that make the world a better place. Desire for money and status is only bad when people do bad things in order to obtain what they desire or they are self centered. Therefore the goal of a government should not be to punish people for being successful in obtaining money, but to create rules to ensure that competition for money results in good for society. So greed is only good when it is better, not only for business but also for stakeholders and stockholders.
